I remember when I started working full-time in the industry, at the end of the previous century, I had just been laid off from my job as a secretary at a global gold mining company. I told my husband that I was going to work from home as a translator. He said “Okay. How much do you think that you will make?”
So, I asked him “What is the minimum salary in Canada now?” This was in early 2000, and based on his answer, I developed my first set of translation rates, as well as a list of companies with whom I wanted to work.
I checked my rates against my competitors on line and through friends who were industry clients, to ensure that they were realistic, and I also checked with colleagues who were already working in the industry.
Then, I hit the ground, literally, and started calling and emailing people who I thought could use my translation services and companies that I hoped would engage me to work with them. I have always worked in fields that reflect my passions, and that are in my blood; as a result, AZ World has evolved to focus on the fields of mining, the environment and sustainability; as well as healthcare, insurance and legal.
Back then, I only offered translation from English into Spanish; today, AZ World provides services in translation, interpretation, voice-over, transcription as well as language advisory. We work in 154 language combinations.
If you need to bridge the language divide and connect with a broader audience, contact us at info@a-zworld.ca or visit www.a-zworld.ca the AZ World team will be happy to assist you.
